July Newsletter
I am thrilled to announce and share the Petey Greene Program’s new five-year strategic plan to guide us in our mission, vision, and growth as an organization. I am so grateful to the PGP staff and Board of Trustees that brought this exciting plan to fruition; and while I am super proud of the final product, it is the strategic planning process itself that stands out in my mind. Each step of the way, our mission was front and center as we considered each of the ways that we could fulfill our central goals.
Our mission remains clear: the Petey Greene Program supports the academic and career goals of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people through high-quality tutoring and other educational programs, while serving to educate our volunteers and the public on the manifest injustice in our carceral system.
We cannot achieve this mission without our incredible staff, awesome volunteers, wealth of partners, and committed Board of Trustees. Thank you all for supporting our work and helping us as we move forward with passion and purpose. We hope you will check out and explore the new strategic plan!

We are delighted to welcome the first two Puttkammer Center for Educational Justice and Equity fellows, Ann Marie Lucas and Timothy Lawrence. The Puttkammer Center fellowship program aims at creating a community of learning and practice at the Petey Greene Program that foregrounds the voices and perspectives of people impacted by the criminal legal system. Ann Marie and Tim will support volunteer engagement and coordination in Pittsburgh and New York, respectively, while contributing to the Puttkammer Center’s research projects and participating in additional professional development opportunities within and outside the organization.
Meet Timothy Lawrence! Originally from Chicago, Tim moved to New York in 2022 to study at the NYU Gallatin School of Individualized Studies. There, as a scholar in the university’s service-oriented MLK Honors Program, Tim has been able to direct an interdisciplinary background towards work with nonprofits in the city. Tim has been working with the PGP NY Office since 2023 as the NYC Service Corps Community Fellow and we are delighted to continue collaborating with him.
Meet Ann Marie Lucas! Ann Marie graduated college at WVU and quickly recognized the privilege of access to education and worked to align with her purpose, leading her to further pursue work in the nonprofit sector with a focus on education. Taking lessons from her own childhood trauma, Ann Marie has a passion for working with youth and adults on breaking the cycle of generational tramas.
Photo of the Month!
Last week, The Well Coffee House in Boston, MA hosted “Drawing on Negative Spaces,” an art night led by system-impacted artist John Sanchez. The proceeds of the event were donated to the Petey Greene Program! We are grateful for a meaningful evening and great partnership.
