Volunteer opportunities are in-person and virtual.

Overview

The Petey Greene Program has been active in New York since the Fall of 2014. We recruit, train, and coordinate undergraduate and graduate student volunteers—as well as community member volunteers—to serve as academic tutors and Teaching Assistants for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people in the New York City area. We recruit volunteers primarily from:

  • Columbia University

  • John Jay College of Criminal Justice

  • New York University

  • New York Community (volunteers not affiliated with the above universities or who are not university students)

We primarily support students enrolled in high school equivalency programs, and focus on the following subjects: math, reading, writing, social studies, and science. Bilingual tutors are encouraged to apply

Current partner institutions and programs include:

  • Administration for Children's Services

  • Close-To-Home Initiative

  • College and Community Fellowship

  • Department of Corrections and Community Supervision

  • Exalt Youth

  • GOSO

  • Institute for Justice and Opportunity at John Jay

  • Justice-in-Education Initiative at Columbia University

  • NeON

  • Westchester County Jail
