Overview

The Petey Greene Program has been active in Massachusetts since the Spring of 2015. We recruit, train, and coordinate undergraduate and graduate student volunteers—as well as community member volunteers—to serve as academic tutors and teaching assistants (TAs) for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people across the state. Many of our colleges and universities are offering service learning credits to those who volunteer with PGP. We recruit volunteers primarily from:

  • Babson College

  • Boston University

  • Brandeis University

  • Clark University

  • Harvard University

  • Holyoke Community College

  • MIT

  • Northeastern University

  • Regis College

  • Smith College

  • Tufts University

  • UMass Amherst

  • Wellesley College

  • Wheaton College

  • Boston Community (volunteers not affiliated with the above universities or who are not university students)

We primarily support students enrolled in high school equivalency programs, and focus on the following subjects: math, reading, writing, social studies, and science. Bilingual tutors are encouraged to apply

Current partner institutions and programs include:

  • Boston Pre-Release Center

  • Massachusetts Correctional Institution Concord

  • Suffolk County Jail

  • Youth Service Centers (Metro, Central, Southern MA, Western MA, and Northeast MA)
