September 2023 Newsletter

These past two weeks, I was in Washington D.C., speaking with legislators, government officials, and other stakeholders on the importance of adult education as part of Adult Education and Family Literacy Week. I also had the pleasure of facilitating a reentry simulation for the United States Department of Justice, alongside our Petey Greene Program Regional Team in D.C. This event helped to raise awareness of the challenges that individuals face as they return home from incarceration.

The NFL football season is in full swing and as I watch my favorite team, I cannot help but think about the role the coach plays in advocating for their players and staff and preserving and promoting the integrity of the game. I wish I could say that as the head coach of the Petey Greene Program, I lead our team to victory, but the truth is that with each event, I learned far more from my team than I myself brought to the game. In the game of educational justice, we have much work to do before we can declare a victory, but through our continued focus on our students and their academic goals, I am confident we will reach that win together.

Staff Spotlight: Meet Timothy!

Timothy Lawrence recently joined the Petey Greene Program's NY Regional Team as a NYC Service Corps Community Fellow! Tim is a student at NYU Gallatin School of Individualized Studies. There, as a scholar in the university’s service-oriented MLK Honors Program, Tim has been able to direct an interdisciplinary background towards work with nonprofits in the city — which include ETCNY, the Edgecombe Community Garden, as well as The Bowery Mission. Tim loves film and photography and as he continues his work in the nonprofit sector, he also hopes to use these interests to be a voice for change. When he’s not running around with a camera, he enjoys playing volleyball, finding new music, and going on scenic walks.

Photo of the Month!

Earlier this month, our awesome Washington D.C. regional team helped to facilitate a reentry simulation at the Federal Judicial Center at the Department of Justice's National Presentation Practice Conference. Participants were able to experience just some of the countless barriers that face people reentering their communities after incarceration.

Thanks to the generous support of donors like you, we continue to support the educational journeys of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people by providing the high-quality, individualized tutoring and academic support that every learner needs to achieve their educational goals. Please donate today.
