Marking Time: A book talk with Dr. Nicole Fleetwood

On May 18, 2020, scholar and author Dr. Nicole Fleetwood (@nicolefleetwood), Professor of American Studies and Art History at Rutgers University, joined the Petey Greene Program for a virtual discussion and Q & A on her recently published work Marking Time: Art in the Age of Mass incarceration.

Marking Time is an intimate and transformative read, that moves us beyond the controlling images conjured by mass incarceration discourse by amplifying how incarcerated artists and their "prison art practices resist the isolation, exploitation and dehumanization of carceral facilities." In Marking Time, Dr. Fleetwood situates the prison as a site of cultural production where incarcerated artists intervene on the visual hold of “rehearsed” and controlling images that work to disappear the lives of those on the inside.
