Reg's Story
When I was 19, economic insecurities and environmental trauma led me down a path I never imagined for myself. Desperate to provide for my unborn child, facing eviction and past due bills, I made a fateful decision that resulted in a 7-year prison sentence. It was during those dark days that I made a commitment to myself and my loved ones that I would never go back to jail.
Through sheer resilience and the unwavering support of a dedicated volunteer, I was granted an opportunity that changed the course of my life forever. After completing my GED inside, I enrolled in Rutgers University and, against all odds, earned a bachelor's degree in Human Resources Management and a master's degree in Labor and Employment Relations post-release. These accomplishments are not just personal victories; they are testaments to the profound impact education can have on individuals seeking redemption.
Today, as the Regional Manager of The Petey Greene Program in New Jersey, I am dedicated to extending those same opportunities to others who yearn for a chance to rebuild their lives. Founded in 2008, the PGP is committed to supporting the academic goals of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals through high-quality volunteer tutoring programs. We understand the immense need for educational support within our carceral system.
Through strong partnerships with carceral facilities and reentry programs, we have built a robust track record of providing flexible, student-centered, and professional tutoring services. However, what our program participants value most extends beyond academics—it is the power of compassionate human interaction between tutors and students. Mutually believing in and committing to the potential of each student fosters their self-efficacy and paves the way for their success.
While we acknowledge that improving educational access for incarcerated individuals is just one piece of the larger puzzle, we firmly believe it is essential. Our society has already failed millions of justice-involved individuals who are or have previously been incarcerated, often unprepared for higher education or living wage work. We cannot discount anyone; we are responsible for each other.
By supporting the PGP, you contribute to ensuring that all formerly and currently incarcerated individuals have access to high-quality education. Your generous donation will directly fund our programs, enabling us to expand our reach and foster an environment of academic support, understanding, and empathy. With your financial support, we can make a tangible difference in the lives of those who have been impacted by the justice system.
Please consider making a generous donation today. Your contribution will help us continue our vital work of providing educational opportunities and hope to those who need it most.
Thank you for your unwavering support, your belief in the power of education, and your commitment to making a difference. With your contribution, we can open doors, inspire change, and offer new beginnings.
