January 2024 Newsletter
The Petey Greene Program is already hitting the ground running in 2024! We are thrilled to be back inside correctional facilities working with students and recruiting and meeting new volunteers at colleges and universities across our regions. And, we’ve been setting the roadmap for the upcoming year: get excited for an expansion of our 5K Run/Walk, another Going Greene event and interesting Justice Education Series webinars. We hope that you will join us for these great events and give your time and energy to help our students and the Petey Greene Program overall succeed.
And if you haven’t attended any of our events or supported the PGP in the past,we hope that 2024 is the year that you get involved with us! You are welcomed with open arms and please feel free to reach out with any questions you might have about getting connected. Looking forward to a great year and helping our justice-impacted students reach new heights, together.
Best,
Jeffrey Abramowitz, CEO of the Petey Greene Program

Learn More About the Puttkammer Center for Educational Justice and Equity!
We launched the new Puttkammer Center for Educational Justice and Equity with a series of meetings and stakeholder engagement sessions that helped us define the Center’s priorities and think collaboratively about how the PGP can help advance the field of carceral and reentry education through research, advocacy, and pilot program evaluation. Among the Center’s first projects, we are partnering with COABE to map existing college readiness programs across the country, piloting the College Bridge program in two new sites, and developing a new training for incarcerated tutors.

Meet Derek Pieper, our new Director of Grants! Derek joined the Petey Greene Program at the beginning of this year and will be providing broad expertise in grant writing and development work to the organization. He brings over a decade of experience, having successfully held various development positions and raising millions of dollars to support impactful non-profit missions. Derek’s professional journey started in the for-profit sector, most recently in mortgage finance. However, driven by a desire for a more meaningful and purpose-driven career, he transitioned to the non-profit sector after earning a master’s degree in social work. Residing in Chicago, Derek holds a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and an M.S.W. with a Leadership and Development in Social Services (LDSS)/Philanthropy focus from Loyola University-Chicago.
We are thrilled to share that Chiara Benetollo will be moving onto a new role within the Petey Greene Program: Executive Director of the Puttkammer Center for Educational Justice and Equity. “I am really looking forward to this next chapter for the Petey Greene Program! There are so many exciting things to be done in this field and I know the Petey Greene Program is in a great position to identify and promote best practices in the field of carceral and reentry education so we can all best support justice-impacted learners.”
