Philadelphia

Overview

The Petey Greene Program has been active in Philadelphia since the Spring of 2015. We recruit, train and coordinate undergraduate and graduate student volunteers—as well as community member volunteers—to serve as academic tutors for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people in the greater Philadelphia area. We recruit volunteers primarily from:

  • Haverford College

  • Swarthmore College

  • Temple University

  • University of Pennsylvania

  • Philadelphia Community (volunteers not affiliated with the above universities or who are not university students)

We primarily support students enrolled in high school equivalency programs, and focus on the following subjects: math, reading, writing, social studies, and science. Bilingual tutors are encouraged to apply!  The Philadelphia program also pairs a very limited number of volunteer Teaching Assistants with Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program courses.

Current partner institutions and programs include:

  • Beyond Literacy - GED and Pre-Apprenticeship

  • District Attorney’s Office

  • Federal Detention Center, Philadelphia (FDC)

  • Philadelphia Anti-Drug/Anti-Violence Network (PAAN)

  • Philly Connect

  • State Correctional Institution at Chester (SCI CHESTER)

  • The Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program
